Matching Speakers to Amplifiers
Matching an amplifier to speakers is about two things working together: impedance the amp can safely drive, and power that suits the speakers with room to spare.
Start with impedance
Check the amplifier's minimum rated impedance and make sure your total speaker load stays at or above it. An amp rated to 4Ω is happy with a single 8Ω or 4Ω speaker, but wiring several speakers can push the load below its limit — see how to calculate speaker impedance.
Then power ratings
Speaker and amplifier power are both given in watts, but the ratings mean different things. Read them carefully:
- RMS / continuous — power the speaker handles all day. The number that matters most.
- Program — typically about double RMS; a realistic musical average.
- Peak — brief maximum. Useful for headroom, not for continuous output.
Why more amplifier power is often safer
It sounds backwards, but an underpowered amp driven into clipping damages more speakers than a larger amp used sensibly. A clipped signal sends sustained energy to the tweeter that it was never meant to absorb.
Loud comes from sensitivity, not just watts
Two speakers rated for the same wattage can differ by 6–10 dB in output. That gap comes from sensitivity, which affects loudness far more than a bigger amplifier does. Don't buy watts expecting volume.
