How to Connect Multiple Speakers to an Amplifier
Running several speakers from one amplifier is routine — as long as the combined load stays within what the amp can drive. The wiring method you choose decides that load.
The one rule that matters
The amplifier only sees the total impedance of everything connected to it. Keep that total at or above the amp's minimum rating and you're safe. Go under it and you invite the trouble in what happens if impedance is too low.
Parallel — simple, but watch the floor
Parallel is easiest to wire and usually gets the most power per speaker, but it drops the load fast. Two 8Ω speakers are a comfortable 4Ω; four become 2Ω.
Series — keeps the load high
Series raises impedance, which helps when parallel would drop too low. Two 8Ω speakers in series make 16Ω.
Series-parallel — the four-speaker standard
For four or more speakers, series-parallel balances the two. Wire two series pairs, then connect those pairs in parallel. Four 8Ω speakers land back at a safe 8Ω.
